Screw aesthetics. Hyder Consulting is only concerned by how tall its building is, not how it looks. The group is planning to build an epic, mile-tall block somewhere in the Middle East.

I'm not sure what to think of this honestly, a building three times taller than the current tallest building and nearly twice as tall as the Burj Dubai, which will be the tallest building when it's finished.
It would be an interesting thing to see, though I'd prefer it be built in somewhere like Tokyo or Los Angeles or New York rather than the Middle East, simply because it would look so out of place, even in Dubai.
jesus you wont get me in there.
not good with heights really.
i cant believe that thing would stay upright!

I'm glad they aren't building it in Tokyo or SF/LA, because when the power's out due to an inevitable earthquake, the thought of trucking my kids down a mile's worth of stairs in the dark is a bit much to contemplate.
The bigger they are, the harder they fall. That monstrosity would make for some impressive falling.

This, imho, is another example of human beings overstepping their bounds for the sake of vanity.
Why in the hell does a building need to be a mile high?
Senseless.

Well, orginally massive buildings like this were designed to be cities in their own right, to try to combat sub/urban sprawl and help the environment, however anymore it seems more to be just to see who can build the bigger building.
Why in the hell does a building need to be a mile high?

Thats some serious penis envy.
The guy that wants to build it needs to get a pump.

Dubai is off the hook. From tents to the world's largest buildings, in 2000 years or less.

The UAE is pretty much the only intelligent oil producing Middle Eastern country.
They know the oil is gonna dry up within 30 years (atleast to a point of not being viable) so they've put the massive sums of revenue from the oil industry into transforming the UAE into a country that is based on financial services, tourism and other things.
They're also one of the few non-democratic Middle-Eastern countries that has started processes of democratization and slowly expanding freedom (women will be allowed to vote starting next year) without essentially being threatened.

That thing would collapse nicely when I command my Advancist invasion of the middle east.
A nicely-placed missile or rocket attack, or heavy artillery round.
Hope it's done by that time... 8)

And they still hang homosexuals.

So does every other major oil producer in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia and Iran), but since they're going to become a major international hub and tourist place I figure they'll get rid of those laws within the next twenty years.
