Car maker Tata Motors announced the world’s first air-powered car last year for India, and now it’s going to be delivering a version to the U.S. starting in 2009 or early 2010. The company’s Zero Pollution Motors (ZPM) division says the $17,800 car will deliver jaw-dropping specs, such as a 1000-mile range on each fill-up of compressed air, a top speed of 96mph, and 100mpg on the gas or biofuel it takes to heat up that compressed air.

Ok, it's not an alternative fuel source itself, but it does run on one, one almost as ubiquitous as the water for Hydrogen fuel cells.

I'm not really sure if I would buy this, I mean it is environmentally friendly and affordable, but I'm not sure it's something I'd want to drive.

Of course I suppose when it comes down to it I want a totally customizable Hydrogen powered Yaris, but since that's not likely to happen, oh well.

What's everyone else think?

Okay how does this actually work? From their website it seems like it gets the power from the grid initially, converting that into potential energy via compressed air. Is that what is going on?

At any rate the specs look pretty impressive.

I'm not sure how the technicals work, engine uses compressed air to drive the pistons, that's about all I figured out.

The concept itself can use any powersource to compress the air though, so it could be totally eco-friendly or only partially so.

Compressed air car! Better hope the tank doesn't explode.

Indeed!

I'm willing to bet that this thing gets crushed before it ever makes it into any sort of "normal" production run in the states.

Big oil can't have anyone costing them money.

They are the only thieves allowed on the block (in other words).
