It's been closed "over there" but it was a very good thread, and in my opinion, critical for atheists to have a place to talk about what it means to be an unbeliever in this day and age.
Discriminated against?
Having trouble getting over certain aspects of religion or superstition?
need to vent about something having to do with religion or irreligion?
Let's carry on with our most interesting conversation ...
Welcome to the new, improved, uncensored ATHEIST CHAT.
With your host, the Pariah formerly known as MM.

Was wondering when you'd get this party started!
Thread Closed.
lol, just kidding. hehe.
I guess you know where i stand AP from our involvement in other discussions elsewhere.
I consider myself to be an atheist though i do have a belief in an
expanded Gaia theory that DOES not include a belief in a supreme
being, just the belief that we are part of a naturally occuring larger
organism.
Not your standard atheism. :D
Yo Mama
02-01-2008, 07:56 PM
Well, no god belief is no god belief.
Being part of an organism isn't a god belief.
So you're still an atheist.
Anyway, anyone is welcome in this thread, just NO FREAKING PREACHING!
Please, people, I want to see no scriptural references in this thread. Pretty please with parmesan on top.
No chance of me quoting scripture, i dont even know the lords prayer. lol.
Yo Mama
02-01-2008, 11:19 PM
So, fellow non theists, question of the day, do you still occasionally have the reflex to pray? If so, under what circumstances, and who to? Does it bother you?
For me, my only prayer reflex is to the make believe parking god some friends made up, Squat. I asked Squat for parking places for years and years. It was such a habit that sometimes, even now, it almost slips out when I'm downtown and need to park quickly.
It's getting easier to deal with the urge now, but it's interesting to me how much our psyches seem to depend on superstitious rituals to make the world seem tolerable.
I wonder if it's JUST habit, or something more -- being steeped in cultural/religious modes of thought have made a form of brainwashing that is difficult to deprogram.
honestly, though i never said it out loud i prayed when one of my twins nearly died in my arms when she was 2 years old.
She had just had a febrile convoltion and i ran down the block to a local doctors surgery with her in my arms when she stopped breathing.
The whole way there, which seemed to take hours but was about 2 minutes, i prayed. I offered my own life in place of hers.
In the end, quick thinking on my part (who wouldve guessed) and a great locum and the ambulance crew saved her.
Thats the only time in my life that i can recall that ive said anything remotely resembling a prayer.
Yo Mama
02-02-2008, 12:13 AM
What were you praying to, mojo? Was it "god" or was it bargaining with the universe?
What were you praying to, mojo? Was it "god" or was it bargaining with the universe?
hmmm...now that you put it that way im not sure. is there a difference?
I'm pretty sure the conversation (onesided) went something like this.
"God, if you exist, please let my little girl live, i'll gladly swap places with her if someone needs to die"
You know adrenelin is rushing at the time, and the world seems to have slowed down by about 75%, i think my brain just started sayin shit to itself unconsciously.
Yo Mama
02-02-2008, 12:31 AM
That's sort of what I'm trying to figure out. The point's been made in some of the books I"ve read on the subject that the god delusion is what an adult replaces their childish need for parental authority and comfort with.
There've been times when I've been under extreme stress and fear, and I've sort of chanted, "oh please oh please" under my breath, but it's not directed at anything really. It's almost like an instinct.
We are funny animals, to think that we can influence events just by begging ... something.
Yo Mama
02-02-2008, 01:39 PM
So, a friend on the "inside" linked me a topic where MySpace has deleted the Atheist usergroup of over 30,000 members.
That and what's going on at ATS are just the slippery slope. I fear Margaret Atwood's vision in A Handmaid's Tale isn't that far off the mark.
In a strange way, the xian fear of "end of the world" may be coming true, but the world ending might be the world of religion as the overwhelming reality of people's lives.
Why else would fundamentalists of all religions hate us so much and spend so much time and effort trying to stop us from speaking out? It has to be fear. Fear that we're right. Fear that we'll wake people up and get them to accept the world as it is. Fear that Jeebus isn't really coming back and there is no heaven with 72 virgins (or was it white raisins?).
In that thread, some of my enemies mourned my passing. It made me feel good to know that even some of my long term foes appreciated the fact that I was upright with them and could have a discussion without making it personal.
Does anyone else sense trouble in the wind for atheism? Or is this an American phenomenon mostly, as our country is rapidly becoming the xian version of an islamic state?

Meh. I can't play a religious fundy that well.
Yo Mama
02-02-2008, 02:29 PM
And that's why I love ya!
If people want to believe in god, fine. It's the ones like you that don't make it horrible. You can deal with an atheist and alternative views.
But those in "the world is 6000 years old" camp are nutso and if they're going to make ridiculous claims on the internet, then I'm going to refute them.
Refute, rebuke, reply. My 3 R's.
Bitchkoma
02-02-2008, 02:44 PM
Hell, I don't care if people want to believe the world is 6000 years old or if they want to believe the theory of evolution is wrong. Don't come screaming that science is all wrong while preaching about it on teh internets. Such irony.
At any rate, so far I don't see any incompatibility between my religious beliefs and science. If anything, it fits nicely together. If not, then it's because the Holy Book is a book of Signs, not Science.
Haha, fully covered :P
Yo Mama
02-02-2008, 02:48 PM
Oh, but you see, "technology" isn't science. Inventors were inspired by jeebus. So it's OK to use the intertubez and medicine, and watch TV, etc, because it's not science.
I am dead serious; I've seen this argument posted on an atheist site I belong to.
I'll do the linky so you can see what I mean:

[Someone points out the obvious fact that c-sections and computers are a benefit of science.]
You are confusing TECHNOLOGY with SCIENCE.
Technology and science are often lumped together, but are totally separate and unrelated things.

I tend to shy away from describing myself as a Atheist. Doesn't "humanist" have such a nice ring to it?
Yo Mama
02-02-2008, 08:06 PM
Much like gay people took back the word "queer" and turned it into a power word, as well as African Americans and their "n" word, I'm claiming atheist as a power word for those of us who don't believe.
Take the easy path? Me? Never.
Deadflagblues
02-03-2008, 12:15 AM
I was kidding. I have no issue being labeled whatever people want to label me as. I do believe Atheist does sound quite pessimistic, as Humanism has a much more substantiated view on what life is, rather than what the afterlife isn't, you know?

Afro-caribbeans is normally the label used over here. And I suppose africans are just africans.
It's funny, but it appears most black people don't mind being called black people. The APA (american psychological association) had a move towards more PC labels of ethnicity, but it was interesting to see articles by black psychologists just using the labels 'Black' and 'White'.
So, when someone complains when I say 'black', I just shrug.

well, i have to vent about something. i'm here in malta and next weekend we have the general election. i've noticed that none of the serious political parties here have the testicular/ovular fortitude to stand up to the catholic church.

So now they are telling us where and when we can have sex, between married consenting adults. sheesh.
its all about power and control with the church.

I'm not sure celibacy is the path to happiness. It's not working for the Catholic priesthood very well, is it?

Hahahha... and then on the other side of the planet we have this guy:
A US church has challenged its married members to have sex every day for a month (http://www.thecheers.org/news/Weird-news/news_12945_A-US-church-has-challenged-its-married-members-to-have-sex-every-day-for-a-month.html)
Yo Mama
02-24-2008, 10:22 AM
ya know, my ex was always on my case about me not giving him enough sex.
If he'd treated me like a human being instead of a slave without any emotions or feelings whatsoever, he might have got his wish.
But if a marriage is unhappy -- say, the man is abusive -- then telling the wife to give him sex for 30 days straight when she's feeling put down might not be the best thing for all concerned. Least of all her.
The last two years of my marriage, if I didn't put out, he'd keep me up sniping at me, making me cry, until I just gave in. It was like being raped every other day.
I just think that if a marriage is on the rocks, suggesting people have sex to "fix it" is probably not the best advice.
Ah. I see I'm rambling incoherently again. Not ... enough ... coffee yet.

Hi
I have no problem atheism, because is religious freedom, i noticed many people with important religion hate atheists for being heretic, i don`t think they call them as heretics and other bullshits.
If has bad reason, atheists should to get rid of their religions, it`s proviking problems, they should to call: KILL ALL ATHEISTS, ARE SATANISTS!!
Not true... depends any atheist is good or bad.
Anyway, im catholic.

30 days of straight sex?
um...ok, now here's a simple equation
menstruation + sex = not enjoyable for most women (from what i've heard, seeing as i've never been a menstruating woman having sex)
also, doesn't the bible have a really harsh view on menstruating women to begin with?

alright, as i now consider myself one of the few holding back the hordes of idiocy that many of us fled from at ats, i must announce that i wish for us to attempt to take it back.
sure, we have our own place now where we're accepted and tolerated and treated fairly, but maybe we could also try to make ATS free and safe for future atheists who wouldn't know about amkon or who would just prefer ats
if i don't get enough support for this, i may have to either get banned or simply leave ats
also, i promise to cruise amkon more if people get behind me on this
i've just been super busy and holding back the hordes is very time consuming when you're one of the few fuckers left to do it.

It is time consuming.
I'm helping you out a bit, but its a temporary thing. ATS has made its bed and can fuckin' fester in it. Who cares? Why care? They don't want freethinkers challenging the rubes. They want quantity rather than quality.
Quantity = $$$$$$$$$$
Get banned if you want. Or even better, just leave. Maybe post once in a while. What is happening there is similar to what happened at Dembski's blog. All the sceptics were banned, and now there's an echo-chamber of frothing rubes. Of course, they'll all buy his and others ID books religiously.

Why stay somewhere frustrating? I kind of get where you're coming from, but I think ATS is a lost cause and wasted effort.
