There is an EXCELLENT private torrent tracker up and open for registration.
For those of you who are into the whole "stealing shit that is too overpriced" thing, check out http://www.ilovetorrents.com
They have pretty much everything and there are some EXCELLENT upload regs there.
Everything is quality with no downloading mislabeled/fake crap.
Great speeds also.

i tried a couple of torrent sites a while ago and i started getting a heap of trojans and spyware.
i was a bit of a novice with my security settings and protection then but i have stayed away ever since.
Are there any precautions that you need to take?
How exactly does it work?
Please explain to the computer illiterate. :)

Get the newest version of uTorrent.
If you download EXCLUSIVELY from ilovetorrents.com, you should be completely safe.
The members there are MILITANT when it comes to trojans and other such malware. If a member is found incorporating any (even by accident) the torrent and their account is removed promptly.
Torrents are the way to go. Far safer than standard p2p. I have yet to get even a touch of malware from ilovetorrents torrent files.
Public torrent trackers, however, are havens for malware/spyware/assholes.
I steer clear of them unless absolutely necessary.
The only thing you have to "worry" about at the private trackers is keeping your upload/download ratio in good standing. As long as you don't "hit and run" you should be good.

A method (protocol) of filesharing. Works best for large amounts of data, i.e. an entire album or an entire movie. The concept behind it is quite brilliant.
Imagine that a movie or an album is a book. Alice has the whole book to share with Bob and Carol. The book is 100 pages long. Bob copies the even numbered page, Carol copies the the odd numbered pages. Once both Bob and Carol have copied the pages, they proceed to copy the missing pages off of each other. In this way, there is less load on Alice's part. She only needs to copy the book once, dividing it up between Bob and Carol.
Now imagine the system scaled up to include Dave as well. Dave can copy some pages of the book from Alice, Bob and Carol, further dividing up the workload.
That's the beauty of torrents. The more people that are downloading a certain file, the faster the transfer gets.
Of course, all this transferring of files takes up Isaac's (ISP) bandwidth. Isaac doesn't like it, and sometimes does something to the network to slow the transfer down. That's where using a private tracker and forcing the protocol encryption helps prevent Isaac from figuring it out. It may even stop Eve (eavesdropper, like RIAA or MPAA) from finding out.

Ahhhh I see. Kinda like on limewire when it pulls from 8 or 9 of the same files.

More or less. The real main difference is that it can download the file from other people who are also downloading it but have yet to complete. So the load is taken away from the seed (the person with the complete file).

TPB is at the mercy of several lawsuits at the moment. These are shutting the site down periodically.
However, the owners of TPB has assured that the site will NOT be shut down permanently.
They are technically in the clear as none of the "illegal" material is hosted on their servers.
Time will tell I suppose.

i shed a tear when demonoid went down.....i will check out the site you mentioned.....i too love torrents...
i have dl's HUNDREDS of hours of music this way....
i have 12 gigs now of just zappa stuff.
gigis of phish stuff too.
just the zappa catalogue was 65 official releases plus live shows and boots...
love me some torrents...
