This rant is twofold:
First, why no Rant forum, huh? What's up with that? I rant plenty!
Secondly: Ringworm.
My lovely purebred Bengal came from the breeder's crawling with it. Now both my cats are in quarantine, in cages in the bathroom, until the treatment clears it up. It sucks. They're bored and depressed and I feel like a real asshole because I'm keeping them in the cages. But it's the only way to keep the rest of the family from catching it, and to keep them in one place to easier medicate and treat them.
Ringworm. Ew.
Now if you'll all excuse me, I have to go in the bathroom, mix up the lime sulfur, and sponge that stinky crap into my cats' fur while they yowl and howl and try turn inside their skins so they can climb me out of the bathtub.
lol. yep i hate those freakin things. worse are the ticks my dog picked up when we went out bush last year, those nasty little bastards nearly killed him.
anyway hope yours get better soon.

ARGH Now I stink like rotten eggs!
The domestic short hair is resigned to the fact he can't get away and just crouches there with his tail tucked under, crying in protest.
The Bengal is strong! And he holds a grudge. I almost lost him at one point. He won't even look at me now.
I feel like a traitor.
Stupid fungus. Grrr.
Even worse, unscrupulous breeder. Double Grrr.

Awesome! I'll use it next time I feel the need. That should be anytime in the next 24 hours or so.

All righty, wish me luck!
The Bengal has completed his 4 week regime of itraconazole and we're going to the vet this afternoon for the first ringworm test. If he's clean, he'll go back in two weeks for another. If he clears that, he's done.
this has been a royal PITA. The psychosomatic itching has been really annoying, but so far, none of us have caught it. My doctor said if we didn't have it by now, we probably wouldn't get it at all, which is great.
Catching the cat to get him in the carrier will be a real ordeal, too. He is so smart, he knows what is going on when I try to catch him, even if I pretend it's just for ear scratches.
And somebody from the vet's office called yesterday to remind me of the appointment and told me to bring a stool sample. Uh, for a fungal infection? I think she had ringworm confused with roundworm. I'm not digging through the litter for poop to take on a drive. Can't tell which cat it came from anyway.

Is it really as much of a pain to get rid of as the web makes it out to be?
All I read is "DOOM! GLOOM! Ringworm never goes away!!!"

Ringworm... Hmmmm
Did you know if you get out a black light you can find the area where the Ringworm is living?
Yep a simple black light will help you locate, and see if you have ringworm...
Yeah its a nasty little thing.. And have pics of them... But I think to save myself some face.. I wont show it..
hehe besides its allmost lunch time!!!

The black light only works on about half the species of Microsporum canis -- the one that cats get the most.
I don't think the one my cat has glowed very much when the vet used the Wood's lamp on him.
He doesn't have any more scabs, just lots of bare skin where fur fell out during treatment. I think it's cool. I'm more worried about the "environmental contamination" they claim keeps reinfecting the cats.
I don't have it in me to bleach the whole house top to bottom daily. So I got some triclosan and have been laundering our clothes in it, as well as sprayed it on the carpeting and furniture. And I got a really good vacuum that picks up pet hair specifically, and have been vacuuming daily. I can't believe how much crap two kids and two cats produce on a daily basis! I vacuum one day, and when I do it again the next day, it nearly fills the bagless chamber with dirt and hair, dust and miscellaneous ... stuff.

I just want to know where the hell all that crap comes from in a 24 hour period. We live near the freeway and near BART, so maybe it's stuff that drifts in from the infrastructure.
BTW, what the fuck is a "utility muffin"?

Ringworm update:
The vet called yesterday and said that the cat's tests were negative. So, apparently, we've beaten the fungus.
I'm not going to relax on my laurels until a month has gone by to make sure that I got all the spores out of the house.
But, it is a real relief to hear that there is no immediate threat in the house anymore.
yay!

Why do they say "rest on your laurels"? It doesn't make sense. Kind of like a local saying for self-praise which literally translated goes like "carry the basket your own-self". WTF?

I dunno; ask the Romans.
Oh, wait, you can't -- they're extinct as a country.

We went over to my dads house a couple weeks ago, and my sister asks my wife after we had been there for awhile. What do you know about ringworm? My wife said only that it is a bitch to get rid of once you have it why. My sister pulls her shirt to the side and says do you think this is ringworm? My wife was so pissed, she said you thought there was a possibility that you had ringworm and you were holding my fucking child?
My stepmom took the dog to the vet the next day, and she has ringworm, my sister has ringworm. If my kid gets it, I am going to be pissed. I remembered reading in here that you had to deal with it GN. So if it turns up here, I will probably be hitting you up for pointers on how to get rid of it.
Oh I will be so pissed, my sister is a little special, she has some major learning challenges. My parents adopted her, and she had literally been dropped on her head a few too many times. I forget that sometimes, but jesus I will be angry with her, she should know, if she had a rash and she didnt know what it was. You would think a little light would go on, special or not, and think to herself maybe I shouldnt hold my 20 month old niece, without knowing what this rash is. I am pretty sure if my daughter does get it, my wife will end up killing my sister.

The vet and my doc and the kid's pediatrician said it's annoying, but not that drastic, in people. I hope it isn't, though -- the cleanup and maintenance until it's gone is a royal PITA.
Let me know if you need pointers -- I worked my ass off for six weeks, but it seems to have worked.
