5 Reasons why America is Going to Hell in a Handbasket.

5. Political Correctness - Not only has the "philosophy" of political correctness stripped us of our testicles in this country, it has also managed to make us feel bad about ourselves for using words that were perfectly commonplace several years ago. Hey, we've got the slavery and genocide carried out by our ancestors to keep us guilty for the next few centuries. Let's wait until then to worry about whether or not ordering our coffee "black" will offend someone.

4. Political Corruption - The system of checks and balances seems to have long gone out the door. This should have been confirmed for MANY when the democrats took a bit of control last November yet, nothing at all changed. While we are busy fighting to "spread democracy", we at home have to wonder if our votes even count when it comes to our elections.

3. Perpetual War for Profit - Still stuck in Iraq after 5 years and nothing has been accomplished. Unless you count a bunch of millionaires becoming billionaires and 4000+ American lives being lost as something. And for what? The only logical answer: MONEY..."OH! But we got Saddam out of power!" Bah, Saddam hasn't hurt any of us over here on American soil, at least the last time I checked.

2. The Federal Reserve System - Everyday we get to hear about the nation's "debt". And who are we indebted to? A small group of rich bankers who made a killing by convincing our government that issuing money that had no solid backing (such as gold or silver) was the good way to go. Our economy is rapidly falling apart and it seems as if nothing will be done about it. A guy named Kennedy tried to fix this mess once, though I hear something bad happened to that guy. Who owns America? The Federal Reserve Board, that's who. We could have our economy fixed by tomorrow morning, if the source of our economic problems weren't the ones in charge of our economy.

1. Apathy - The American public, as a whole, knows more about what happened on Big Brother or UFC last night than they know about the workings of their own government. The only thing sadder than that is, THEY JUST DON'T GIVE A [snip]! The stresses of everyday life have become too much of a hassle for us here in the land o' the free. We have slipped to the point where we have forgotten that freedom is not just given away, it is EARNED. We have been fed more and more crap to keep us placated over the years so the crooks can run amok without us putting up much, if any, fight. It's time to WAKE THE [snip] UP AMERICA! What good are your television and cell phones gonna do ya when you are inside on of those FEMA run concentration camps? If nothing else, I guess you can always take pictures of your fellow detainees with your camera phone. Apathy is going to kill this country quicker than anything else. Unless us American's make a concious effort to get off of our collective [snip] and change a few things, violently if necessary, we stand as much chance as an ice cube in [snip]

Re: #4 & $1.

I agree, but much of the reason political corruption is allowed to continue is because of the cute systems they've put in to slide the voters into apathy. If we could accomplish a few things we might be able to reverse our trip in the handbasket.

First, the incumbent politicians have gerrymandered the districts into long, winding strips so that almost all of them are "safe". By drawing boundaries so that there's a large majority of one party (either R or D) the incumbent is assured of election no matter how sleazy s/he is. We need to get the districts back to compact without trying to get a significant majority of either party.

While there are occasional tries at correcting the districting system, it's usually presented by a group which wants to tilt it in their favor. What I suggest is a computer program that sets up all the districts so they have the minimum perimeter for an equal number of voters. That way, the politicians wouldn't be assured of election unless they actually served the voters.

I don't bellieve in long posts so I'll put up more of my suggestions later.

funny, those 5 points could apply to a number of developed country's. just replace federal reserve with whatever local equivalent and democrat, republican with conservative, liberal, labour.

Answer therefore is: i dont think America will be on its own in that Handbasket.

Hi JasnReznick,

I answered you once before on this one, maybe you remember.

You hit these five nails exactly on their heads.
You have the guts to say it, as others stay silent.
You say in my opinion the truth, and nothing but the truth.
You know, because I don’t live in America, will not say that I am blind for the things that are happening over there.

Apathy is king. Money, the economy, the government, consumerism, any sort of repetitive thought consuming system, all encourage apathy.

Why are our freedoms being stripped away? Because we now have purposely been guided into getting freedom mixed up with the ability to consume what you choose. We know that things won't buy us happiness, but we choose to ignore it because we think maybe we're wrong and maybe we just don't have enough things.

Instead of paying attention, we'd rather laugh and sing and pray and worship and feel good, because it requires very little thought. So much so, that denial of truth becomes a defense mechanism against inconvenience. Convenience becomes our hero, responsibility becomes our enemy. Simple fact is that convenience kills thought. Freedom is responsibility for your actions.
Seems to me like there is a bit of doublespeak within our definition of freedom and love.

There's another big one. Doublespeak. How can we solve problems if we don't even know what words are supposed to mean?

I agree with your list of 5, but as a few others have said, apathy is the main problem (and your #1).

If people don't give a shit, nothing positive will happen anyway. Fuck the politicians, we're the ones to blame when we don't do shit.

Secret, secret, I've got a secret!

There are actually 6 not 5.

6 being people that change the spelling of a word like, say, Amerika, just to look and sound cool. If it wasn't for our mutual love of all things Bill Hicks, I would have eaten your kidneys by now.

Wrong! You're all wrong. I can sum up America's problems in one word: entitlement.

Just like theft is the core theme of the 10 commandments, entitlement is the core theme of what ails America.

Entitlement to squeeze as much cash out of people as possible. entitlement to take what we want in the world and damn the consequences. Entitlement to a 72" plasma TV whether we can actually afford it or not. Entitlement to do whatever we want whether it inconveniences someone else or not.

That's all it is. A horrible overwhelming sense of entitlement that permeates American culture like blood in the water.

Are you including yourself in this equation as well GN?
Again, I find myself agreeing with you.
Fuck, I work with a guy that fits the mold your described to a T.
Entitlement + Complacency = Freedumb
I have my moments I know but at least I can admit to being a hypocrite.
Now, if eveyone else would follow suit maybe we could actually get some work done.

Off for my birfday shower....

That sums up all of America's problems?

While I agree that America has become a society of hand out wanting garbage........"entitlement" doesn't even begin to scrape the surface of all the problems AmeriKa (1972, you cock stain!!) is facing.

This problem with entitlement IS a major problem with this country. However, it's some of those things I listed above that gave many of us this "gimme, gimme, gimme" attitude we have now.
