Hey man, tell me what you think of this article:
Religious beliefs focus too much on self (http://www.physorg.com/news119805385.html)Moving away from traditional religious beliefs to trendy, self-focused religions and spirituality is not making young adults happier, according to new research.
A UQ study has found that young adults with a belief in a spiritual or higher power other than God were at more risk of poorer mental health and deviant social behaviour than those who rejected these beliefs.
Young men who held non-traditional religious views were at twice the risk of being more anxious and depressed than those with traditional beliefs.
The study was based on surveys of 3705 21-year-olds in Brisbane under the Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy.
Don't ask me why it was done by the 'Study of Pregnancy' department.
I'm trying to find the actual paper but they didn't mention what journal it was published in... but since it's the University's press release, I think it should be an accurate enough reflection of the actual study.

.
I'd like to see the funders of this "research." I lay you odds that its is funded by some organized religion. I bet you my bottom dollar right now.

Also, why is the article published by a physics publication?

Well, just like ATS, lately a lot of off-topic news gets published there.
It caught my eye because I noticed a lot these New-Agers tend to also be quite "angry" (I'm thinking of Kacen... he got banned from ATS sadly -- too angry it seems)
You could be right that it was funded by a mainstream religious organisation. The Christian blogosphere has snapped like it was Gospel, and they completely missed the most important part of the news -- She said individualism was the common thread in the shift away from traditional religious thoughts to non-religious spirituality.
This focus on self fulfilment and improvement over others' wellbeing could undermine a person's mental health with many people feeling more isolated, less healthy and having poorer relationsihps.
“My generation was about social responsibility and collective interests compared to the Me Generation,” Dr Aird said.
“New Spirituality promotes the idea that self-transformation will lead to a positive and constructive change in self and society.
“But there is a contradiction — how can one change society if one is focused on oneself?”
That's basically the meat of the argument, and from a psychological perspective, it does make sense.
Funny (or maybe obvious) how this article on the other hand was completely ignored by them:
Roots of Fundamentalism traced to 16th-century Bible translations (http://www.physorg.com/news113748912.html)
Also from the same source. Damnit! My source for science news has been flooded with religious news :x

 its from australia dude, its either funded in some way by a mainstream religious organization or were having a lend of ya! :D
seriously i dont know how they picked the people used in the survey but for a predomiately christian country we are very apathetic towards religion.
i'm obviously biased as im an atheist, but of the social group that i interact with, both work and personal, all of my friends and aquaintances that claim to be religious very few if any have set foot inside of a church other that for weddings and funerals.

A lot of that "anger" stems from being able to discern what organized religion is trying to do to the masses.
